About lburke227

Hi,

My name is Lori and I currently am trying to finish my pre-res in community college with only three quarters left to get into the Dental Hygiene program. They have sadly raised tutition this last year and for 16.5 credits at a community college its $1600 without books, for the classes I am taking this next quarter starting January. They say tuition is due 7 days from now being...the 1st of December. My parents cannot help me, I am 22, yet have to claim their income on FAFSA so that doesnt help either. My father has been unemployed since January 09 and I do not count on him getting a job anytime before Christmas or even until he becomes retired. If anyone is willing to donate any amount to help pay for this next quarter or the couple quarters after that, I would be very greatful. If not, thanks for hearing me out anyway, its completely worth a shot. God Bless,

Lori

NC MACT needs you and can help you

  NC MPACT NEEDS YOU !

NC MPACT will have to temporarily close due to funding needs unless people act now.

Who Can Benefit From the MPACT Website?

People in need of dental care without dental insurance or the ability to pay for services.

People with dental insurance and the financial ability to pay for care.

People that would like to learn more about oral health.

People that are not dental professionals, but would like to help.

Community leaders that would like to make sure all people can get dental care.

Dental professionals that take personal responsibility for the oral health of their communities and desire to make a difference in oral health care access.

Dental professionals concerned about universal-type population coverage.

Tip of the day

You have to floss. I wish there was a way around it, but you must clean under your gums and between your teeth.

I share this because many problems could be avoided by flossing. Please floss.

Go to my site, where I explain more on the topic.

Cassie, dental hygienist

Why go to the dentist?

I will illustrate the importance of regular dental visits.

A. You purchase a new car and faithfully change the oil, have tune-ups and otherwise are careful to get the car maintenanced regularly. (This represents the person that has been fortunate to go to the dentist as recommended throughout life)

B. You purchase a new car and the payments are killing you. Hey, it's new and every thing is working well, maintenance can wait. (This represents the person who does not frequent the denist. Whether not as a child or with financial issues as an adult. If it isn't broke, don't fix it, right?)

The likeliness is that car B will have a problem before car A. Why? Because car A is getting regular visits to the shop. Before anything can go wrong, the mechanic can address it.

If your parents took you to the dentist as a child, please let them know you appreciate it today. We weren't all so fortunate.

Let's try it again...

A. You hear a little sqeak when you use the brake. Immediately you take the care in to have the brakes serviced even thought the car was stopping just fine.

B. You hear a little squeak, but brakes have got to wait and the car is still stopping. You are able to carry on for some time without problems stopping. Next thing you know there is grinding....uh oh.

Car A just replaced the pads. Car B had to replace the pads and rotors.

If you have a small cavity or maybe you feel a little sensitivity when you have chocolate, your dentist can make a restoration. If you put it off, you could be in for a root canal treatment and crown. $140 vs. $1900

Your dental health is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Whatever it takes, you must have the care you need...regularly.

Directions to get help

I am frequently asked how to get help for unmet dental needs. First, I would like everyone to know that this is the very reason I became involved with dentistry. I was a patient in pain with limited resources, but more significantly, I lacked education. I invite all of you to ask questions about dental care and here are a few tips for getting the care you need.

  • Contact your local community colleges to determine if they have a dental hygiene school. Dental Hygiene School's can provide many services and resources to get you back to health.
  • Locate your state's dental schools. If you have one within a reasonable distance, you can find the help you need for 50% or less than regular dental fees.
  • Contact your state's dental society. The state dental society is an organization for dentists, but can frequently give guidance to those seeking help. Some state organizations specifically provide information for those in need.
  • Other great resources for finding free and low-cost dental care are local health departments and social services.

Whatever you do, stay encouraged and keep trying. It will take perseverance, but your health is worth it.     Feel free to email any questions you have on your search.
